Mamelodi Sundowns Clinch Fourth PSL Title In A Row

Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the South Africa Premier Soccer League with three games to go after beating Supersport United 3-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

Goals from Lebohang Maboe, , Aubrey Modiba and Themba Zwane saw the Brazilians cursing to their fourth title in a row.

Coming into the tie, Sundowns needed just a win to clinch the title with their closest opponents Amazulu being seven points adrift.

The Brazilians delivered the job with two fresh faces Kermit Erasmus and Brian Onyango drafted into the line-up.

The victory see Masandawana become the first club to clinch four consecutive league titles in the PSL era which began in 1996.

Sundowns have won most national league titles (14)  as they previously shared a record with Kaizer Chiefs, who have lifted four PSL trophies, four National Soccer League titles and five National Professional Soccer League trophies.

Meanwhile, Premier Soccer League (PSL) today announced the list of nominees for the 2020/21 PSL Awards.

The awards will take place on Sunday, 06 June 2021 at 20h00 and will be live on the SuperSport PSL channel (202) and SABC.

A number of Masandawana players and coaching staff have their names in the hat for the prizes.

Peter Shalulile and Themba Zwane will battle it out for the footballer and players’ player of the season awards, with Maritzburg United’s Thabiso Kutumela also nominated into the two big categories.

Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been nominated for the goalkeeper of the season award while his teammate Mosa Lebusa is up for the defender of the season award.

For the midfielder of the season award, Sundowns pair Rivaldo Coetzee and Zwane are up against Makhehlene Makhaula of AmaZulu.

In the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season category, Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena is up against AmaZulu’s Benni McCarthy and Golden Arrows coach Mandla Ncikazi.
