Mamelodi Sundowns Look To Stun Defending Champions Al Ahly

Reigning African Champions Al Ahly of Egypt will host South African side Mamelodi Sundowns in the first round of the CAF Champions League quarter-final at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 21h00 CAT.

The Red Eagles finished as runners-up in Group A behind Tanzanian giants Simba SC having accumulated eleven points from six games.

As a result, Al Ahly stayed at on a clear course to win an unprecedented 10th African title, but they will have to wade through a tricky match against Sundowns.

They will look to 28-year-old attacking midfielder Hussein Al Shahat when they lock horns with the Brazilians at home.

Meanwhile, Sundowns dominated Group B which they won ahead of runners-up CR Belouizdad of Algeria having collected 13 points from six games.

The dominance in the group stage earned the South Africans giants a place in the quarter-finals.

Sundowns’ danger man is 27-year-old Namibian striker Peter Shalulile, who will be looking to inspire his side to victory in Egypt

The Club of Century, Al Ahly, are looking to defend their Champions League title having won it last November.

The tie between the Egyptian giants will elicit the 2001 memories, where both sides met in the final, and this time Pitso Mosimane will be sitting on the other side of the bench having joined Ahly from Sundowns last year.

In fact it is the third year in a row that the two clubs meet in the last eight of the competition with Sundowns thrashing Ahly in 2019 but losing 3-1 on aggregate last year.

Senegalese match referee Maguette Ndiaye will handle the game between Al Ahly and Sundowns and will be assisted by compatriots El Hadji Malick Samba (Assistant 1), Djbril Camara (Assistant II).
