Mauritania: Didier Gomes Takes Charge As Head Coach

Frenchman Didier Gomes Da Rosa has been named coach of Mauritania national football team, Ducor Sports reveals.

He replaces Corentin Martins who was shown the door following bizarre 0-0 draw with Tunisia in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

A statement Mauritania Football Federation (FFRIM) released on Wednesday night said the federation has settled on the 51-year old as the best option.

Prior to that, the FFRIM  were in talks with former Tunisia international and Birmingham City midfielder Mehdi Nafti.

According to the federation, the Frenchman trainer will be unveiled to the press in the next few days after the finalization of the terms of engagement between the two parties.

Da Rosa was previously incharge of Tanzanian Premier League side Simba Sports Club who fired him after suffering a shocking 3-1 loss to Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana in a return leg battle of the preliminary stage of this season’s CAF Champions League.

The former Al-Merreikh coach also had a spell with Ismaily SC of Egypt where he was sacked in August owing to a spate of poor results.

He had a successful stint with Guinean giants Horoya AC where he was fired in November 2019 despite guiding the team to the league title last season.

He also had a stint with Cameroonian side Coton Sport from 2013 to 2015, winning the league title twice, the Cup once, besides reaching the Confederation Cup semi-final.
