Mayele’s Goal-Drought Continues As Yanga Hit Kagera Sugar

Fiston Mayele’s goal-drought persisted Sunday to seven matches as Yanga won 1-0 against Kagera Sugar in their Tanzania Premier League match at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza.

Olympique Marseille transfer target Clement Mzize scored the all-important goal on 18 minutes from a Faisal Salum cross in the box.

Mayele scored 19 times in 35 appearances across all competitions last season  and missed the Premiership Golden Boot by one goal.

His prowess in the 2021/2022 season saw the striker attract a host of suitors including South Africa Premier Soccer League giants, Kaizer Chiefs.

Sudanese side Al Hilal Omdurman were also interested in Mayele’s services but the deal failed to materialize, as his desire to stay at the Tanzanian side proved decisive after the Blue Waves bid fell short of Yanga asking price.

Prior to joining Yanga, Mayele used to play for DR Congo giants AS Vita, where he won the 2020/2021 domestic league title with the club.

The DR Congo international last found on the back of the net in a CAF Champions League match against Al Hilal Omdurman on October 8 in Dar es Salaam.

The win against Kagera Sugar extended Yanga’s dominance over Kagera Sugar to four matches in the last four years.

Narseddine Nabi’s men have now moved up from third to the top the table on 23 points, same as second-ranked Simba, while Kagera are down to 13th position on 11 points.

Yanga have played nine matches, one less than the rest .They will next face Singida Big Stars on Thursday 17 November at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
