Mt. Kenya United Starring at Relegation After Dishing Out a Second Walkover

Mt. Kenya United now risk a drop from the Kenyan Premier League should they dish out another walkover in their remaining four league matches.

Mt. Kenya United now risk a drop from the Kenyan Premier League should they dish out another walkover in their remaining four league matches.

The cash strapped Kenyan side is currently bottom in the KPL log and have now issued two walkovers to opponents in protest over non-payment of their salaries.

Three weeks ago, the team failed to show for their match against Gor Mahia and on Sunday they boycotted their match against Mathare United at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

The rule states that if a team issues three walkovers, they immediately get relegated to the lower league and United are one walkover away from going down.

“The laws are very clear. Issuing a walkover has serious sanctions. If a team issues three walkovers they will be relegated plus other serious sanctions,” KPL CEO Jack Oguda said.

Mt. Kenya United’s woes started when their sponsor, Nakumatt Holdings ran bankrupt and the team sold to politician Francis Mureithi.

Despite promising to revive the team, Mureithi failed to keep his word and the players have been suffering due to non-payment for many months.
