Duncan Mubiru opened the 2020 Uganda National Rally Championship with a massive victory in the Mbarara Rally on Sunday.
Mubiru, in his familiar Mitsubishi Lancer Evo10 with Musa Nsubuga as his co-driver, powered through and kept his calm to topple the other experienced drivers in the array.
The Kikankane Rally Team crew were fastest in the majority of the eight competitive stages, clocking 01:44:69 to rack his third Mbarara win.
“This event was meant for us, we were also given 2 mins 30 secs penalty for delaying in the service park while fixing the gearbox part,” said co-driver Nsubuga after the victory.
“We decide to fight and finish in the top five positions. That’s out strategy this season, we want to accumulate as many points to battle for the National Rally Championship (NRC) this time around.
“If we manage to get a podium finish it will be a bonus,” Nsubuga he added.
Fred Busulwa emerged second navigated by Joseph Bongole in a Subaru Impreza clocking 01:54.11 ahead of third-placed Omar Mayanja who clocked 01:57:08 in a Mitsubishi Evo10.
Ashraf Ahmed merged 4th with Jackson Sserwanga, Ibrahim Lubega, Robert Kasana and Samuel Watendwa finished in the 5th-8th position.
Out of the 27 drivers who took part in the event, only 12 managed the demanding terrain.
The next round of National Rally Championship will head to Busoga for Eastern Motor Club Rally during the weekend of 8-9 March 2020.
