Goals from Boniface Muchiri and Eugene Asike earned Tusker FC a 2-1 win over Gor Mahia at the Ruaraka Sports Complex on Thursday evening.
Gor Mahia started the better of the two sides and had an early effort at goal when Jules Ulimwengu blasted just wide from inside the area.
Tusker should have gone ahead in the 10th minute, as Henry Meja picked out Kevin Monyi with a low cross but the striker failed to steer the effort on target from six-yards out.
Gor Mahia took the lead on the 14th minute when the ball broke from Keneth Muguna’s delivery from the right side and found South Sudanese striker Tito Okello well placed before sending an easy tap past Micahel Wanjala.
Faraj Ondenyi then missed a glorious opportunity to restore parity after a corner as Geoffrey Ochieng headed the ball back across the face of goal for Sammy Miseh who mishit the bouncing ball over the bar.
Gad Mathews was called into action shortly after the halftime break to palm away Hashim Sempala’s curling free-kick from 25-yards out.
Gor Mahia were struggling from set-pieces and were nearly punished in the 49th minute but Tusker defender, Christopher Oruchum, managed to blast over from point-blank range.
Tusker got an equalizer minutes later, as Boniface Muchiri sent a superb free kick into the top corner from 20-yards out.
Shortly after Tusker goal, Ulimwengu got down the right-hand side and delivered to the near post for his strike partner Okello, who headed against the outside of the near post.
Harun Shakava looked to take matters into his own hands as he skipped past one challenge and delivered a teasing cross into Andrews Juma in the box, but the striker headed over the target on 80 minutes.
Tusker completed a fantastic turnaround in the 90thminute when a corner was played behind Asike, who sent a powerful header past several Gor Mahia defenders on the line and into the back of the net.
