Nigeria Confirm Friendly Match Against Portugal In Lisbon

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced an international friendly match between Nigeria and Portugal slated for November 17.

Thursday’s announcement means Jose Pesserio’s men will play two big friendlies in twenty days to keep themselves busy after the postponement of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Before the outing against 2016 Euro champions the Super Eagles will face 2019 African champions Algeria in Oran on 27th September.

The games are expected to prepare the five-time African champions for the 2023 calendar year as their double-header of Afcon qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau was shifted to March next year.

Portugal on the other hand aim to use the Super Eagles friendly as a test ahead of the group stage fixture against the Black Stars of Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The highly anticipated match against Portugal will be played at The Estádio José Alvalade, which is a natural grass facility that holds 50,000 spectators, and is home venue for Sporting Clube de Portugal.

The stadium is named after José Alvalade, the founder and first club member of Sporting CP who died in 1918.

This will be the first time Nigeria and Portugal will be meeting at senior level.

Both countries have met thrice at the U-20 level with Portugal winning all three games.
