Nigeria’s Ese Brume Settles For Long Jump Bronze

Ese Brume from Nigeria settled for bronze medal in the women’s long jump  at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday.

Reigning world champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany won gold while American Brittney Esse picked up a silver medal.

Brume, who is three-time Africa senior champion in the long jump, leapt 6.97 meters which is way below her personal best of 7.17 m.

The 25-year-old had qualified for the final on her third attempt with a leap of 6.76m in her second Olympics.

However, it was Mihambo’s day as she snatched the victory from former champion Brittney Reese with her last leap of the completion.

The German was lying in the bronze medal position ahead of her final jump but powered down the runaway to register a season-best jump of 7.00 meters.

For Reese, who is 2012 Olympic Champion, made a jump of 6.97m and was guaranteed a silver with one jump remaining.

Brume’s bronze becomes Nigeria’s first track and field medal at the Olympics since 2008 when Okagbare won a silver medal in Beijing.

Her achievement makes the long jump the first individual event to give Nigeria three medals at the Olympics with Chioma Ajunwa’s gold at the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics topping Okagbare’s silver from 2008.
