Nyasa Big Bullets players will be forced to forfeit half of their monthly salaries in line with the club’s pay-cut plans from next month.
Bullets Chief Executive Officer Escort Chinula announced that the club had opted to revise their remuneration program thanks to the coronavirus pandemic which has halted sporting activities in Malawi and beyond.
Chinula revealed that both the management and the players gave the decision a clean bill of health. He, however, said that the players will receive their May salaries in full.
“We engaged the players on this matter and they agreed to our proposal. We are pleased that they are willing to help the club in these tough times. We treated this as an internal matter throughout our discussions until we reached a consensus,” Chinula said during a press briefing on Friday.
Chigoga added that the cut also extended to club’s supportive staff including the technical panel members.
“We have not imposed this on anyone within the club’s setup. We had extensive discussions with all concerned parties and everyone has understood why this decision has to be taken. The club will continue to pay half salaries until when the season kicks off and is in full swing,” he added.
The Malawi Super League football season is yet to kick off as the National Council of Sports (MNCS) banned all sporting activities as a precautionary measure to Covid-19 pandemic.
So far there have been calls from some fans to resume football in the country to emulate politicians who have breached the safety measures.
Football Association of Malawi President Walter Nyamilandu was recently quoted saying if the ban on sporting activities is extended to October and beyond, the football body will have no choice but to consider the season lost and will start planning for another season which will likely start in January 2021.
