Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has fired national team head coach Clarence Seedorf and his assistant Patrick Kluivert following the team’s elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement, Fecafoot said it had engaged the two coaches for four years in August last year based on deliverables, with the main one being defending the AFCON title.
“Following the premature exit of Cameroon’s men’s flagship squad, Cameroon’s football federation in line with clauses in their respective contracts has decided to bring to an end to the contracts of Seedorf and Kluivert,” part of the communique reads.
The Indomitable Lions were knocked out of the tournament at the round of 16 stage when they were beaten 3-2 by Nigeria.
Seedorf had replaced Hugo Broos, who was fired in December 2017, less than a year after guiding the country to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The decision to send away Seedorf was reported to have been fuelled by Cameroon’s Minister of Sports Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, who criticized the Indomitable Lions technical bench on live television where he said the coach should be axed from his position.
Football fans across the Central Africa country have been questioning Seedorf’s preference to work from outside Cameroon as he only visited the country for a few days before matches.
At the group stages of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Indomitable Lions managed a win and two draws in Group F.
The former Dutch star won just three of nine competitive games since taking over the Indomitable Lions.
