Ogenyi Onazi has left Danish Super Liga side SonderjyskE after his contact was terminated by mutual consent.
The 28-year-old Nigerian midfielder had nine months remaining on his deal at the Sydbank Park.
Onazi had linked up with the club in October last year as a free agent after severing links with Turkish Super Lig outfit Denizilspor earlier in the summer over unpaid wages.
A recurring Achilles tendon injury during his times at Denizilspor restricted him to three outings, with no single goal under his name.
“There is not a finger to put on Onazi’s efforts in SonderjyskE. He has been a professional to the tips of his toes,” said club’s sports director Hans Jorgen Haysen.
“He has fitted in well with the group with his dedication and he has also scooped out his experience to the young players on the team.
“He came with a backlog from an injury, but he has been in almost all training sessions with us, and also earned a starting place in the Sydbank Cup and a few innings in the 3F Super League.
“However, it did not turn out quite as he and we had hoped, and he himself has expressed that he might fit better into another league than the 3F Superliga, and he now has the opportunity to try it out.
“We thank him for his efforts in the light blue jersey and wish him all the best for the future.”
Onazi, was part of John Obuh’s Nigeria team to the 2009 U17 World Cup where the Golden Eaglets bowed 1-0 to Switzerland in the final, made his Super Eagles debut in 2012 has been capped 51 times.
He was a member of the Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup Of Nations title. He also part of Nigeria’s team to the 2014 and 2018 World Cup.
Injury ruled him out of Gernot Rohr’s squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where the three-time Africa champions finished third.
