Rwanda Premier League champions Rayon Sports have appointed Mexican Javier Martinez Espinoza as their new head coach.
Espinoza has taken over the reins at Gikundiro from Brazilian trainer Roberto Olivieira Goncalves who parted ways with the club on mutual agreement a few weeks ago.
The 47-year-old signed a one-year contract on Saturday morning before driving to meet players at the team’s training facility in Nzove, Gasabo District.
The former Vipers SC of Uganda gaffer is expected to lead the Blues’ first training session on Sunday (tomorrow) as they prepare for the upcoming 2019/2020 season opener against Gasogi.
While announcing his appointment on Saturday via the club’s official Twitter handle, Rayon Sports tweeted, “@rayon_sports confirm appointment of Javier Martinez Espinoza as new manager on a one-year contract ..”
The signing of Espinoza counteracted early reports suggesting that embattled Rayon Sports would appoint Ghanaian Charles Kwablan Akonnor as new head coach.
Espizonia had been without a job since December last year after he was shown the door by Ugandan Premier League outfit Vipers SC.
The Kitende-based stated that they fired him due to the side’s failure to make it to the CAF Champions League group stages that season after a defeat away and at home to Algerian outfit CS Constantine.
Espizonia, however, brings a wealth of experience having previously handled Nicaragua side Juventus Sports Club, a stint in Guatemala and a couple of domestic clubs in his native Mexico; Cruz Azul, Montrere and Pachuoi.
