Former Cameroon striker Roger Milla has paid an emotional tribute to Diego Maradona after the Argentina legend died of heart attack.

Milla offered condolences on Twitter hours after the news of Maradona’s passing was confirmed at the age of 60.

The Argentine icon, widely considered one of the greatest players of all-time, suffered a heart attack at his Buenos Aires home.

He had successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier in November and was to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Milla wrote: “I cannot believe it. My dear friend Diego Maradona passed away today. Terrible news. Sad year. Rest in peace legend. My sincere condolences to all his family and to the Argentine people.”

Milla and Maradona became friends during the opening match of 1990 FIFA World Cup where Indomitable Lions shocked Argentina beating them 1-0.

Maradona started his career at Argentinos Juniors where he played between 1976 and 1981. He then went on to have a trophy-laden career for several clubs in Europe.

He had spells at Boca Juniors and Barcelona, before playing the majority of his matches for Napoli in Serie A.

Maradona led his country to the 1990 final in Italy, where they were beaten by West Germany, before captaining them again in the United States in 1994, but was sent home after failing a drugs test for ephedrine.
