South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is close to joining Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

A number of clubs have been interested in the 30-year-old, with Orlando Pirates particularly keen last season.

However, it is understood Mamelodi Sundowns are now at the head of the queue, with Williams set to become the club’s first  major signing of the summer.

Williams is expected provide competition to 37-year-old Ugandan goalkeeper Denniss Onyango, and his arrival  is likely to trigger the departure of Ricardo Gross from Sundowns.

The gloves man has enjoyed an illustrious career at SuperSport, where he has amassed over 250 appearances at a club where he has been based for over a decade.

Williams has four trophies under his belt during his stay at the club, having clinched the Nedbank Cup on three occasions in addition to the Telkom Knock-Out title.

His goalkeeping heroics at the Tshwane giants have earned him 29 caps for South Africa.

He made his international debut in an international friendly against Brazil in March 2014 and was named Bafana Bafana captain last year.
