Rwandan football on Saturday suffered a blow after the Ministry of Health suspended the 2020/21 domestic season.

The Rwanda Premier League, which had just reached it match day three, has been affected after players of Rayon Sports and Rutsiro rested positive for coronavirus.

Rwanda so far has confirmed over 6,000 cases of COVID-19, a worrying situation that has led to the Ministry of Health issuing a directive to suspend football with effect from December 12th.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) reacted to the order, releasing a statement on the status of its competitions.

This is the second time that football in the central African country has been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, the league was brought to a halt and could not resume after the country remained under lockdown.

However, in August, FERWAFA approved the competition calendar for the new campaign and also scheduled some of the competitions which had been postponed owing to COVID-19.

It is worth noting that in May, APR were later declared champions as they were leading the league log when the season was suspended.

Heroes FC and Gicumbi FC were consequently relegated from the top-tier to the Second Division League based on their standings.
