The Rwanda Premier League will be suspended until at least 1st September because of the continued spread of coronavirus.
The topflight football league, and every other sports activity, has been at halt since March 15.
The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has agreed with the Ministry of Sports directive that the current season can be “extended indefinitely”.
Under the current rules, the season had been scheduled to end on 1st June.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Sports states that a cabinet resolution has been passed as part of prevention measures to be implemented in the continued fight against the spread of coronavirus disease.
“Reference is made to the consultative meeting held on Tuesday, May 5th 2020 between the Ministry of Sports and National Sports Federation. A decision has been made to have local games and leagues resume starting September, with training starting a month earlier (August 2020),” reads part of the statement.
“Sports Federations have been advised to engage their member clubs, team officials, coaches and athletes to start planning accordingly.”
Before the decision was taken, many football lovers in the East African country speculated that the league would be declared null and void with no title awarded or relegation for bottom sides.
APR were top of the Rwanda Premier League when the season was suspended in March.
Some African countries have seen their seasons cancelled such as Mauritius and Angola in Africa or prematurely ended such as Kenya.
