Senegal star Sadio Mane has applauded Gambia national team for their first ever qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Scorpions secured their spot at the 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon next year after claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Angola in Bakau to clinch one of the two places from Group D.
Gambia will meet Democratic Republic of Congo in a dead-rubber tie on Monday but congratulatory messages have already started pouring in, with Mane expressing his delight for Gambia’s historical achievement.
“Nothing to give up and fight until the last energy. This is what The Gambia have achieved to historically qualify for a CAN final. Congratulations to the players. Scorpions and to all the Gambian people,” Mane wrote on his Instagram page.
Gambia are one of eighteen teams who have now secured their qualification for the much-anticipated tournament, with the remaining 9 spots to be decided across the course of the next five days.
Meanwhile, Morocco and Ivory Coast have qualified for the next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after winning their match-day games respectively.
The Atlas Lions qualified from Group E after their rivals Burundi and the Central African Republic drew 2-2 in Bujumbura on Friday.
The result assured former champions Morocco of a top-two finish four hours before playing Mauritania in Nouakchott.
On the other hand, Ivory Coast thrashed Niger 3-0 in the Group K match at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey.
The result saw the Elephants climb to the top of the group standings and they also qualified for the finals, while the Menas bowed out of the competition with one match to go.
