Sierra Leone Cancels 2019-20 Football Season Due To Covid-19

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced the complete cancellation of the 2019-20 domestic season due to the coronavirus disruptions.

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced the complete cancellation of the 2019-20 domestic season due to the coronavirus disruptions.

In an emergency meeting held on Wednesday at the SLFA headquarters, the 14 Premier League clubs agreed that that competition will not return amid the ongoing fight against the coronavirus.

As a result, the current season has been declared void with no champions declared and with the same teams for next season.

However, Bo Rangers, Kamboi Eagles and East End Lions were left to decide among themselves who will represent the country in CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.

Should they not be able to reach an agreement, SLFA will then decide as to which two teams will represent the country before CAF’s August deadline.

Domestic football in Sierra Leone has been on hold since a national ban on public gatherings, including sporting and religious events, came into effect as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease on March 17.

Earlier this month, the SLFA revealed it was engaging the Government of Sierra Leone over the possible resumption of the football under strict safety protocols such as playing matches behind closed doors, having had a first request rejected.
