Simba Storms CAF Champions League Group Stage

Simba Sports Club have managed to make in to the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League group stages following their 4-1 aggregate triump over Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto.

This comes after Msimbazi Reds managed to beat the visitors 1-0 in the return leg played at home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday to progress to the group stage thanks to the 3-1 win the side registered in the first leg played in Luanda.

Simba will now be waiting for the draw where they seek to better their 2020 outing where they nearly qualified for the quarter finals.

Coming into Sunday’s match, the visitors had not had a not so impressive record away.

Having lost at home to Simba Sports Club it was always going to be tough for them to turn around the results.

De Agosto had edged out Red Arrows of Zambia 2-1 on aggregate after picking a scoring draw away and and a 1-0 at home.

The Angolans went all out in the first half in search of an early goal with Simba doing everything possible to defend their lead.

But they found it hard to break down the Simba backline and they were forced to lose concentration in defence which allowed Zambian import Moses Phiri to slot in home in the 33rd minute for the hosts.

“I am really excited and happy for what this group of players has achieved. We have made it for  Simba, we have made it for Tanzanian football,” caretaker coach John Mgunda said after the match.

Perto de Atletico, Mamelodi Sundowns, Esperance Tunis, Raja Club Athletic, Zamalek, CR Belouizdad, Al Merreikh, Vipers, Al Ahly and JS Kabylie are some of the other teams that have confirmed their place in group stages.
