The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) has finally evoked article 4.1(12) which technically expelled Sony Sugar FC after they failed to honour three matches this season.
The club from Western Kenya failed to honour league matches against AFC Leopards, Tusker and Zoo FC, blaming lack of funds for their decision.
After an emergency meeting of the KPL board in Nairobi, Friday afternoon, the KPL, in a communique made available to Ducor Sports, confirmed that Sony Sugar has been expelled from the league.
The board unanimously evoked articles 4.1 (12) of the KPL statues which state that “if a club fails to honour three league matches without an acceptable reason, such a club shall be expelled from the league and its matches played and un-played shall be cancelled”
“Following the review of the referee and match Commissioner’s report of the KPL 2019/2020 match number 090 between Zoo Fc and Sony Sugar which was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, it was noted the away club, Sony Sugar, failed to honour the match,” the communique read.
“Being the third time this season that Sony Sugar FC have failed to honour three matches, Sony Sugar FC have been expelled from the Kenya Premier League and all its results nullified. The remaining league fixtures involving the club have also been cancelled,” it adds.
Sony had secured an annual renewable sponsorship deal in August with Hong Kong-based company Quantdragon Limited, but the sponsor vanished into the thin air without paying the club a single cent.
The implication of the latest KPL decision means that KCB, Bandari, Ulinzi Stars, Leopards, Tusker, Wazito, Mathare United and Zoo as well as Kisumu All-Stars have lost points as the result of Sony’s expulsion.
Sony, who won the 2007 Kenyan Premier League, have been a permanent fixture in the topflight league since gaining entry in 1993.
