An own goal by Djibril Diop saw Zamalek beat Generation Foot 1-0 in the second leg of 2019/2020 CAF Champions League rescheduled clash played at El-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Thursday 24 October.
The result combined with White Knights 1-2 loss in the first leg sees the Egyptian giant progress into the next stage where they will face Primeiro de Agosto, TP Mazembe and Zesco United in Group A of the competition.
It was a cagey opening half with very few chances in front of goal.
Generation Foot saw more of the ball but offered little in terms of real attacking threats.
Zamalek, on the other hand, looked a little timid and seemed content to sit back in defence which resulted in them having no real chances to score in the opening quarter.
The first effort on goal came in the opening minute, but Mostafa Mohammed saw his long-range shot well-saved by the Bafana Bafana keeper.
Five minutes later Tarek Hamed met a cross from the right, but the header went just over the target.
In the 17th minute, Dominique Mendy also tried his luck from long-range, but his shot went just wide of the Zamalek goal.
Generation Foot just sat back afterwards but were left with an egg on their face as pressure from the Egyptians saw Diop fire into his own net whilst attempting a defensive clearance.
The visitors almost grabbed the equaliser minutes to halftime, but Mohamed Awad denied Issa Diof at the back post.
Zamalek looked threatening on the counter-attack and that nearly paid dividends for a second at the 56th minute but El-Sayed and Ibrahim weren’t on the same wavelength.
The White Knights had a luxury of a missed penalty in the game as Mahmoud Alaa saw his kick hitting the woodwork with Niare well beaten.
Generation Foot tried to fight their way back into the game and came close to an equaliser in the 78th minute when a 20-yard free-kick from substitute Bougazelle shaved the wrong side of the crossbar.
On the other end, the White Knights continued to push for a second goal and they were nearly rewarded in the 88th minute when Emam cut the ball back for Mohammed Hamdi, who failed to hit the target from six-yards out.
Despite failing to increase their tally, Zamalek booked a place in the last 16 after knocking out Senegalese champions with 2-2 on aggregate.
