Stellenbosch FC has been dealt a major blow as midfielder Mpho Matsi will miss the remainder of the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season because injury.

The defensive midfielder ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during a training season on Sunday and is expected to take six to nine months to recover.

“It’s unfortunate that we announce the injury of Mpho Matsi. [Matsi] sustained an injury in training on Sunday, 16 [August],” said a statement on club website.

“He was subsequently sent for an MRI scan, which confirmed a ruptured ACL in his left knee. He is planned to undergo surgery and long-term rehab.”

Before the setback, the former Pretoria University star was in fine form having managed 18 Absa Premiership appearances.

Matsi joined Stellies at the beginning of the season on-loan from another Premier Soccer League outfit  Cape Town City FC.

The 30-year-old was loaned after failing to command a regular spot under then coach Benni McCarthy.

However, he was one of the players that helped the Team of Choice to retain its Premier Soccer League status where they went on to win all their matches in the play-offs.
