Stuart Baxter has officially announced his resignation as South Africa national team head coach, just weeks after taking Bafana Bafana to the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 65-year-old confirmed that he was stepping down in a press conference in Johannesburg on Friday.

“Someone should continue with this project, and therefore I’m resigning as Bafana Bafana coach,” said Baxter.

Baxter was appointed for a second stint as South Africa coach in May 2017, having previously mentored South Africa for a year between 2004 and 2005.

He shortly resigned after Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2006 Soccer World Cup.

The English manager leaves the post after being in charge of Bafana Bafana for 21 matches, winning eight, with four draws and nine defeats.
