Sunday Chidzambwa Resigns as Zimbabwe Coach

Sunday Chidzambwa has resigned his position Zimbabwe national team coach with immediate effect.

Sunday Chidzambwa has resigned his position Zimbabwe national team coach with immediate effect.

The 67-year-old took Zimbabwe to their fourth Africa Cup of Nations after being appointed two years ago, but his side were knocked after failing to win a single game in Group A.

The Warriors registered two loses and one draw in Egypt, a performance that made fans call for his exit saying that he had become a dinosaur to the game due to his old age tactics.

In a letter addressed to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), Chidzambwa said: “This letter serves to notify you of my decision to resign from the position of coach of the Zimbabwe men’s national football team with immediate effect.”

Chidzambwa made history in 2004 when he took Zimbabwe to their first-ever appearance at the AFCON finals.

In 1998, Chidzambwa guided local giants Dynamos to the finals of the CAF Champions League, the first local club to go that far in the tournament.

The former Warriors skipper later had a coaching stint in the Absa Premiership in South Africa with Black Leopards which did not produce the anticipated impact.

His return to the local league with ZPC Kariba also ended somewhat acrimoniously, with leaked audio of his conversation with fellow technical committee members revealing frosty relations with the club’s hierarchy.

Zimbabwe were knocked out of AFCON 2019 following two losses, against Egypt (1-0) and DR Congo (4-0) as well as 1-1 draw with Uganda.
