Nigeria Super Eagles’ held its first training session on Wednesday as part of their preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles set for Saturday at Stade Linite in Victoria.
The session was supervised by head coach Gernot Rohr, with a pool of 18 players participating, hours after holding a recovery session around the beach.
Goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi arrived at the camp late and are expected to be part of tomorrow’s training session.
Troost-Ekong and Ola Aina will be unavailable after suffering injuries while playing for their clubs abroad while Alex Iwobi has been withdrawn due to sickness.
Meanwhile, Isreal- based John Ogu is expected to arrive at the team’s camp later in the day as he left the Murtala Mohammed International Airport a few hours ago.
The Super Eagles will look to garner all three points against the Pirates on Saturday to get their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track after losing their first game 2-0 at home to South Africa in June last year.
While addressing reporters ahead of the Saturday’s clash, coach Rohr warned his players not to underrate their opponents.
“For us to win, we must not look down on Seychelles because everybody thinks they are no team but if we don’t raise our game we will be shocked,” he said.
The match will be played on the artificial turf of the national stadium and will be officiated by David Omweno from Kenya who will be assisted by compatriot Gilbert Cheruiyot, while Uganda’s Mark Ssonko will act as second assistant referee.
It should be noted that Omweno was among the two referees suspended by CAF for three months in 2016. He was sanctioned for disallowing a legitimate goal scored by Libya in their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia.
