FIFA World Cup: Russia 2018 Qualifiers

The African Teams in Contention for the Three Remaining World Cup Spots.

With the qualification rounds to the biggest football showdown on earth entering the final stage, African heavyweights will this weekend battle it out for the remaining three spots at the berth.

Egypt and Nigeria have already booked their tickets but with group A, C, and D about to take shape, Ducor Sports takes you through the various permutations for the teams that still stand a chance to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Group A.

Starting with group A, Tunisia who will host their North African rivals Libya will need only one point from the derby if they are to return to the World Cup for the first time since 2006. In case of a loss, the Carthage Eagles who are currently top of Group A can still make it if DR Congo fails to beat Guinea.

However, if Tunisia loses and Congo wins, FIFA’s article 20 would be applied where the team with a superior goal difference advances and if they have the same goal difference, then the team that scored the most goals in the round advances.

P Diff Pts
Tunisia 5 +7 13
DR Congo 5 +5 10
Guinea 5 -6 3
Libya 5 -6 3

Group B.

With Group B already settled, bottom-placed Algeria will be hosting Nigeria who already qualified while Zambia and Cameroon have promised to use the match as a build-up for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nigeria 5 +8 13
Zambia 5 +1 7
Cameroon 5 -2 6
Algeria 5 -7 1

Group C.

Group C has one of the most interesting matches in this round. A mouthwatering crunch fixture in Abidjan between leaders Morocco and second-placed Ivory Coast will determine who goes to Russia.

Morocco will need to avoid a defeat from hosts Ivory Coast if they are to qualify while only a win can ensure the Elephants topple surprise table leaders, Morocco.

p Diff Pts
Morocco 5 +9 9
Ivory Coast 5 +4 8
Gabon 5 -5 5
Mali 5 -8 3

Group D.

This became the most complicated group after a post-match cancellation of a first-round fixture between South Africa and Senegal. FIFA decided to cancel the match after the referee awarded a dubious game-changing penalty in favor of South Africa.

The decision from the Bureau of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers gave an initially struggling Senegal another life-line they hope to maximize on November 10th.

On paper, all the teams in the group have a chance of qualifying, considering there are three matches still to be played.

The Lions of Teranga will confirm a place with a win against South Africa in the replay, whereas a draw would also leave the side in contention needing just a single point from Burkina Faso to qualify.

A win for South Africa, on the other hand, would open the race with all the four sides still very much in contention for a spot.

Senegal 4 +4 8
Burkina Faso 5 0 6
Cape Verde 5 -4 6
South Africa 4 0 4

Group E.

Ending with Group E, with Egypt already preparing for Russia 2018, the three remaining sides will just have to use the final game as a preparation fixture for the upcoming African Nations Qualifiers.

p Diff Pts
Egypt 5 +4 12
Uganda 5 +1 8
Ghana 5 +2 6
Congo 5 -7 1
