Antwerp are the missing cutting edge that made them a side to look out for in the Belgian top tier.
Dieumerci Mbokani, the DR Congo goal assassin they acquired on a free transfer who has turned their saviour all season so far, is out injured.
At 34, the erstwhile Monaco front-man is the league’s top mask-man on fourteen goals and still counting, effectively making him one of the leading goal-getters in the modern European game this term.
His latest feat represents how far he has come off having initially teed off the season a doubted striker believed to be well beyond his sell-by-date.
However, if there is to be an overall assessment of Antwerp’s cause of rebirth, there sure won’t be discounting of his invaluable inputs.
In fact, The Royals are a lot more precarious with him leading the line and blunt in his absence.
They’re currently encountering the latter and visibly struggled to slalom past fellow league contestants Kortrijk on Thursday night to reach the finals of the Belgian Cup where Club Brugge would be their adversaries come March 22nd.
Mbokani would’ve by then recuperated but for now, they have to contend with making do without Dieumerci.
“And yes, we had more chances with Mbokani, but he is not there. That’s no excuse, we just have to do it,” Antwerp’s General director Sven Jaecques said.
