Egyptian League champions Al Ahly was left gaping in shock after losing to Wydad Casablanca 2-0 in the Total CAF Champions League. Congo’s Fabrice N’Guesse drove in the opener two minutes after the break following an assist from teammate Abdellatif Noussir.
The Moroccan side had looked the most eager even though the visitors showed some flashes of brilliance on the ball but it was the Botola League champions, who doubled the score through Walid EL Karti to put matters beyond Al Ahly’s reach.
Wydad will now hope Al Ahly will lose to table-toppers Zambia’s Zanaco as they beat Cameroon’s Coton Sport this Saturday to stand a chance of going into the next round. The Zambians are on an unbeaten run, securing 10 points in a possible 13.
They sailed over bottom-rocked Coton Sport at the Stade Omnisport courtesy of Sakala’s last-gasp winning goal.
Earlier on Tuesday, DR Congo’s Vita Club won its first group match after four previous unsuccessful attempts, beating second-placed Ethiopian side, Kedus Giorgis 2-1.
A brace in the first half from Tady Etekiama Agity – the second from the spot-kick – won the Kinshasa outfit the points. The Dolphins, notwithstanding, remain rooted to the basement of Group C.
In another Total CAF Champions League encounter, Sudan’s Al Merreikh breezed past Mozambique’s a faltering Ferrorviaro Beira, in Omdurman.
Elsamani Saaldeldin and Ahmed Abdallah combined to twist the game on its head, racking up points for the Sudanese and consequently reducing forward Massasica Fernandes Maninho’s earlier opener, to a mere consolation.
