Kenya’s Tusker FC and Tunisian side CS Sfaxien will battle for a place in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup when they meet in first leg of play-off round at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Tusker dropped to the Confederation Cup after defeat in the Champions League while Sfaxien made to the play-offs after beating Rivers United of Niger in the second preliminary round of Confederation Cup.
The Brewers will be looking for a ticket to the group stages for the first time in the club history whereas their opponents will be looking to add their fourth African title.
Tusker coach Robert Matano is well aware of the threat posed by Tunisians but he remains optimistic they can pull appositive result.
“We know we are facing a good team with a lot of experience but we have to go and show ourselves as well. We have the chance to fight for a historic place in the group stages and that is what will push us to ensure we do well. We are ready and willing to do our best,” Matano said.
His sentiments were echoed by team captain Eugene Asike who promised a better show after a poor run of results in recent matches.
“We are going to look for win at home and we have prepared very well. We need to have good start and good result which we can defend away from home,” said Asike.
Tusker were thrashed 4-0 by Zamalek of Egypt n the first round of the CAF Champions League and are expected to make amends.
CS Sfaxien won the CAF Confederation Cup twice (2007 and 2008) and lost 3-2 on aggregate to FUS de Rabat of Morocco in the 2010 final.
The winner of the two leg play-off will qualify for the group stage of the competition.
