Uganda Appoint New Head Coach

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed the appointment of Jonathan ‘Johnny’ McKinstry as their national team head coach.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed the appointment of Jonathan ‘Johnny’ McKinstry as the national team head coach.

McKinstry, 34, has signed a three-year contract as Uganda Cranes coach.

He replaces Sebastien Desabre who left his position two months ago on mutual consent after the side’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations last-16 exit.

The Northern Irishman was most recently coach of Bangladesh club Saif Sporting Club.

FUFA unveiled him to the media on Monday in a press conference held at the federation’s headquarters in Mengo.

McKinstry has previously coached both Rwanda’s and Sierra Leone’s national sides.

Under his guidance, Sierra Leone climbed to their highest FIFA ranking, but he was fired after a poor run in African Nations Cup qualifiers.

His first task is to prepare Uganda Cranes for the return leg of the CHAN 2020 qualifier against Burundi in Kampala.

Uganda triumphed 3-0 during the opening leg played a fortnight ago in Bujumbura.
