Uganda grabbed their fifteenth CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup title with a 3-0 win over Eritrea in the final played on Thursday at StarTimes Stadium Lugogo, Kampala.
Jonathan McKinstry’s men dictated play from the onset and they nearly went ahead in the sixth minute but a poor touch from Shafiq Kagimu let them down.
Eritrea broke free two minutes later and found Ali Suleman, who failed to profit from an inviting position.
The Red Sea boys threatened again after 25 minutes, but Abel Solomon thwarted Robel Kidane from the far side after rushing from the goal-line.
However, Uganda seized control three minutes later when Allan Okello threaded a fine pass for Bright Anukani, who controlled well before firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Efrem Haile’s side grew stronger after going behind, as the likes of Abreham Isayas and Habte Gebremesqel started having a bigger influence on the game.
Uganda ended the half on a stronger note, however, Eritrea had Deyben Hintseab to thank on numerous occasions, as he popped up with a few important interceptions and blocks in the first half.
Cranes nearly extended their lead shortly after the break when John Levita spotted Eritrea custodian off his line but the defender’s effort sailed just over the crossbar.
The Rea Sea Boys keeper came to his team’s rescue in the 54th minute, as he pulled off a superb save to deny Viane Ssekajugo from 12-yards out.
Uganda doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, as Mustafa Kizza collected a long pass, before clinically firing into the far corner from the edge of the area.
Eritrea were again sliced in the 88th minute after Joel Madondo invaded the area to flick into the bottom corner following a cutback.
