The 2017 Zone 5 Club Basketball Championships got off to a successful start at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, in Kampala Uganda, which is host to a number of cross-border teams taking part in the week-long tournament which began on 1st October and ends on the 7th.
Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Somalia, alongside Uganda, all made appearances to tip-off the opening games for Sunday’s schedule.
Defending champions and hosts, City Oil refocused their sights on reclaiming the trophy with a solid start just two days after falling to compatriots, Betway Power Basketball club in the domestic league with a 93-46 win over Tanzania’s Savio.
Betway Power was also not far off from the objective at hand with a convincing 87-55 win over a physical ABC also from Tanzania, to take all spoils of the day.
But it wasn’t a good start for Ethiopian sides – Hawasa City and Gondar City – who were no match for Rwanda’s Patriots and Kenya’s Kenya Port Authority, respectively.
The Ethiopian men’s teams were left with no hopes of making a significant impact after losing in respective order, 110-43 and 108-35.

In the ladies’ category, Somalia’s Horseed fell to Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Canons in a 108-42 loss.
Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) managed to set a tone over Rwanda’s APR to finish strong with a 57-45 win while Tanzania’s Don Bosco couldn’t keep up with Kenya’s Equity who won 70-48.
