Uganda Cranes head coach Jonathan McKinstry is set to become the first coach to lose his job after poor results achieved at the 2020 Africa Nations Championship.
The East African football giants managed one point in their three matches and failed to survive in Cameroon at their fifth appearance.
McKinstry was named the head coach of the Cranes in September 2019 by Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to succeed French national Sébastien Desabre.
Ahead of the tournament, McKinstry claimed he had his best ever preparations and remained upbeat.
But Tuesday night’s 5-2 thrashing by title holders Morocco in their final Group C match could turn out to be his graveyard.
According to a source at FUFA, the federation is set to meet with McKinstry on Saturday evening, when his future will be decided.
“FUFA is set to meet with the coach on Saturday and the decision about his future at the Cranes will be made public on Monday,” the source tells DucorSports.
“He is as good as gone.”
McKinstry was appointed in 2019 and his initial three-year-contract is set to expire in September next year.
The Irishman has been a tourist in his coaching career that has seen him have stints at English side Newcastle United, New York Red Bulls, the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana and the Craig Bellamy Foundation in Sierra Leone.
Despite having little experience at a senior level, the Irishman was in 2013 appointed as the interim coach for the Sierra Leon national team.
He was sacked in September 2014 before being appointed the new national team coach for Rwanda in March 2015.
In November 2018, McKinstry joined Bangladesh Premier League side Saif SC replacing Englishman, Stewart Hall.
He tendered his resignation at Saif in September 2019 and flew to Uganda to take the lucrative Cranes coaching job.
