Victor Wanyama Shock Omission From Kenya Squad

Montreal Impact midfielder Victor Wanyama is a shock omission from Kenya’s 36-man squad for the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Uganda and Rwanda.

The Kenyans listed the players who will be involved in the matches in Nairobi and Kigali on their federation’s website without giving a reason for the former Tottenham player’s absence.

Six other players involved in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October last year have also been left out by coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee.

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Mandela, Las Palmas midfielder Ismael Gonzalez and Hødd goalkeeper Arnold Origi all miss out, as do Simba SC centre-back Joash Onyango, Coca Cola attacker John Avire and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Antony Akumu.

Wanyama was dropped by Mulee for one match during the Nations Cup qualifiers but the coach denied there was any tension between him and the senior players.

The Kenyans were one of favorites to qualify from the Group G of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers but they were shocked by minnows Comoros.

Wanyama,30, has been on top form at Montreal where on Saturday scored a winner in his club’s 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls.

The Harambee Stars play Uganda at 3 pm on September 2, 2021, at Nyayo Stadium, after which they will travel to face Rwanda on Friday, September 3, 2021.

The Kenyan’s are in Group E of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers alongside Rwanda, Uganda and Mali.
