The first round of matches in the 2023 WAFU A Women’s Championship was marred by resounding victories for the victorious teams, with The Gambia being one of them.
The Gambia defeated Sierra Leone 4-1 on Saturday in Group B of the tournament, with Catherine Jatta scoring all four goals.
Jatta put her team ahead after just two minutes of play, and she added a brace in the 20th minute to give her team a two-goal lead at halftime.
Just four minutes before the hour mark, Jatta’s hat trick gave the female Scorpions a third goal to extend their lead after the first-half break.
However, the Leone Stars rallied to cut the deficit, and Matilda Kabba’s goal in the 62nd minute gave them a breakthrough.
Ten minutes later, Jatta scored the fourth goal of the game to seal the rout and regain their three-goal advantage.
With a double brace, Catherine Jatta won the Woman-of-the-Match award and is currently leading the scoring list.
Although “it wasn’t a very tough game,” according to Mariama Sowe, the head coach of the Gambia, it was a good start for her team, and they are not taking any game lightly as they get ready to play Senegal in their next match.

We are coming all out to get the three points; if we can’t get the three points, we have a different game plan, but we are coming all out. We are not taking any game lightly because this is women’s football; expect the unexpected; we are coming all out to secure our three points.”[/perfectpullquote]
