WAFU A Women’s Tourney: Cape Verde, Gambia Commence Preparation

The women’s national team of Cape Verde started preparing on Monday for the upcoming WAFU Zone A women’s cup.

Cape Verde will host the competition from January 20–30.

Nine nations, including Cape Verde (host), Liberia, Senegal (holders), Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, The Gambia, Mali, and Mauritania are anticipated to take part.

The pre-convicted players, a total of 23, participated in more physical training as Cape Verde, under the direction of coach SilvériaNédio, started training sessions at the Estádio da Várzea on Monday.

The women’s national team of The Gambia has also started practicing elsewhere. The female scorpions did not perform well in the first edition of the competition, which was the previous edition, as they were unable to move past the group stage.

Head Coach Mariama Bom Sowe has assembled a provisional list of 29 players that commenced training at the National Technical Training Centre in Old Yundumon Monday, January 9. The daily training to hone the skills of the team will wrap up next week ahead of the sub regional tournament, according to the Gambian FA.

Other international players, such as Liberian-based RuggyJoof and Mbassy Darboe, are anticipated to join the squad soon.

The pair recently had a wonderful experience when they played for the champions of Liberia, Determine Girls, in the CAF women’s champions league.
