A team of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officials arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday morning ahead of the third inspection of facilities that will host this year’s World U-20 Championships.
The three-day visit by IAAF officials starts today through Saturday and will see the delegation tour the facilities that will host the championships, which run from July 7-12.
On arrival, the team was received by the Organising Committee (OC) chief executive officer, Myke Rabar and directly proceeded for a meeting with the various departments within the committee.
“This visit is extremely important for Kenya and will effectively kick off the final leg of our preparations to host yet another successful global competition,” said Rabar.
Rabar indicated that the delegation will also address a press conference touching on their visit at a time and location to be confirmed in due course.
The IAAF delegation are expected to tour the competition and warm-up venues, the accommodation and training facilities as well as hotels that will host IAAF family, technical officials and the media.
Kenya won the bid to host the World Under-20 Championships following a largely successfully World Under-18 Championships held in 2017 with a record turnout of over 60,000 fans attending the event at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
However, the curse of doping threatens to taint the most successful nation in track and field.
More than 60 elite runners, including Rio Olympic marathon winner Jemima Sumgong and 1,500m three-time world champion Asbel Kiprop, have been suspended for doping.
