Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca face counterparts RS Berkane on Saturday 10, 2022 at Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat, to determine the winner of the 31st edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup.
Wydad qualified for the annual match as the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League winners having defeated Egypt’s Al Ahly in the final.
The two-time African champions, Wydad come into the match having appointed a new coach –Houcine Ammouta, who replaced the current Morocco national team head coach Walid Regragui.
Wydad are heading into this encounter having lost their last four domestic games including a Throne Cup defeat to Berkane.
Their most recent competitive game was a Morocco Botola Pro 1 match against FUS Rabat, who held them to a one-all draw, six days ago.
Wydad will look to their star forwards Bouly Junior Sambou and Ayman El Hassouni.
It will be Wydad’s fourth final and they will go level with city rivals Raja Casablanca for the most Super Cup final appearances for a Moroccan team.
Meanwhile, RS Berkane qualified for the prestigious game as the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup winners having defeated South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the final last May.
The Moroccan giants are undefeated in their last six matches in all competitions.
They were to a 1-1 draw by FAR Rabat in their in their most recent competitive game over a week ago.
Attackers Mohamed Iajour and Mahmoud Benhalib are RS Berkane’s dangermen.
RS Bekane will be making their second appearance in the Super Cup having lost the 2021 edition to Al Ahly
Since the first-ever Super Cup match was played in January 1993, it has only been four times that the Champions League winners have ended up on the losing side, with those occasions coming in 1993, 1998, 2012 and 2020.
On all of the other 23 finals, the Champions League holders have dominated the tie, and it is that fact which swings the pendulum in favor of record African champions Al Ahly.
