Young Africans added Azam Sports Federation Cup (Tanzania FA Cup) title in their cabinet with a victory over stubborn Coastal Union at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
The Citizens beat Wagosi wa Kaya 4-1 on post match penalties following 3-3 deadlock after the extra time to lift their fifth Federation Cup title.
Coastal Union took the lead in the 10th minute through Abdul Suleiman, but Yanga grabbed an equalizer through Feisal Salum in the 56th minute.
Second half substitute Heritier Makambo gave Yanga the lead in 82nd minute but six minutes later Suleiman found his second goal to send the match into extra-time.
Suleiman registered a hat-trick in the 98th minute but Dennis “Wonder Kid” Nkane hit the target in the 113th minute to send the match straight to penalties.
Amani Kyata missed the first kick for Coastal Union before Yanga goalkeeper Djgui Diarra saved Rashid Mohamed’s penalty.
Yanga penalties were scored by Heritier Makambo, Dickson Job, Yannick Bangala and Khalid Aucho. Victor Patrick is the only Coastal Union players who scored his spot-kick.
The victory takes Yanga’s tally in the cup competition to five, three behind Coastal Union. Yanga coach Nasreddine Nabi Vaz Pinto, who has won his third trophy with the club, said they were worthy winners.
“We deserve to win this competition due to our consistency and the hardwork we put in. We played so many matches and this win is great success to that effect,” he said.
His Coastal Union counterpart Juma Mgunda said his charges did not deserve to lose the match.
“Football is an unfair game at times because the best team lost today. We dominated the match, had the best chances, hit the cross bar and were even denied a penalty, but in the end we lost,” the former Tanzania international said.
