Zambia Super League champions Zesco United have confirmed that Kenyan international Antony Akumu has left the club after failing to agree on a new contract.

Zambia Super League champions Zesco United have confirmed that Kenyan international Antony Akumu has left the club after failing to agree on a new contract.

The midfielder, who joined the Zambian giants in 2015 from Sudan’s Al Khartoum, is rumoured to be nearing a move to South African side Kaizer Chiefs.

Although disappointed with Akumu’s decision to leave, Zesco chairman Richard Mulenga told the club website that progress is being made to strengthen the squad.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the departure of Kenyan midfielder, Anthony Akumu. The club made a lot of effort to extend Akumu’s contract, unfortunately, the two parties could not reach an agreement,” he said.

Already, the club has begun recruitment as it has acquired Congolese striker Chris Mugalu on a two-year contract from Lusaka Dynamos.

Meanwhile, dependable marksman Jesse Were has renewed his contract with the Ndola based outfit for another two years.

“We are delighted to announce that Jesse Were has extended his stay with us for the next two years. Were has been a key part of this football club’s success as such we are extremely delighted that he has made the right decision to be with us for the next two more years,” Mulenga added.
