Zesco United Sack Coach Mumamba Numba

Zambian Super League giants Zesco United have announced the sacking of  head coach Mumamba Numba.

This comes after the team failed to progress in the CAF Confederations Cup competition following a defeat to Royal AM of South Africa.

Zesco were held to a 1-1 home draw by South African side in a match played at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola on Saturday. They were eliminated from the competition on away goals rule after the first leg played in South Africa ended goalless draw.

“Zesco United FC management would like to thank Mumamba Numba for his services in the last two seasons which resulted into the team winning one league title and qualifying for the 2021/22 CAF Champions League and the 2022/23 CAF Confederations competitions respectively,” said Zesco United CEO Charles Kalala.

“The club will immediately begin the recruitment process for a new full-time head coach. In the interim, ZESCO United 2nd assistant coach, Alfred Lupiya will act as head coach.”

Numba joined ZESCO United in 2020 after signing a three-year contract which saw him guide the club to a ninth league title in his first season.

The 43-year-old former Zambia international had succeeded George Lwandamina who was shown the door following the club’s poor performance in the 2019/20 season.

Numba is one of the best coaches in Zambia having won the FAZ/MTN Super League title in 2016, Absa Cup championship in 2017 and reaching the group stage of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup with Zanaco.
